Recently i got a big laptop for my daily work. For the daily transport between the office and my home on the bicycle a conventional laptop case is not suitable, since these cases are usually not water proof and they don’t provide a fixation for the rack.
For my daily work i use a big laptop. For transporting between the office and my home on the bicycle a conventional laptop case is not suitable, since these cases are usually not water proof and they don’t provide a fixation for the rack.
My solution is to use the “Office Bag QL2” by Ortlieb. “QL2” stands for “Quick Lock 2” and describes the system of fixation on the rack.
The successor QL3 does not have any prominent hooks on the bag, but therefore you need to mount an attachment on the rack, which makes the thing quite less flexible – therefore i decided to use the older QL2 system.
Typically for Ortlieb is the water proof material and the roller latch – this means you can also drive at heavy rain without fearing that the content of the bag may get wet. Also typically are the reflecting surfaces on both sides.
The rack hooks are secured with a lock, which can be opened with a short pull at the handle and they are construed to be used with stays with a diameter of 14 mm. The provided reducers also allow to adapt them for smaller diameters, like on the Tubus Cargo with 10 mm. Another hook secures the bag against hinging away to the side. All hooks can be adjusted without tools.
Very convenient: The rail with the hooks is mounted slanting, so you don’t hit the bag with your foot even with short chain stays. The bag will be provided with the rail mounted to be used on the left side – but can also turn the rail, if you prefer the right side, but you need tools to loosen the screws.
The bag is available in two sizes, which only differentiate in width. The variant “M” shown here 10 cm wide, the larger variant “L” 14 cm and is also suitable for wider files. In any case there is an adjustable compartment for Laptops, which fits exactly in my case. An additional smaller compartment on the side for documents and a number of smaller pockets and straps for pens, keys and small parts perfect the thing.
A detachable shoulder belt with a skid-proof padding is also provided, so you can easily carry the bag over a longer time.
The fasteners for the closure are not as solid as I hoped. One plastic band is broken:
