In June 2019 Nextcloud introduced an interesting text editor which uses Markdown as format but does not show this optically – the user interface is very tidy and text will always be shown and edited formatted. You can use Markdown syntax when entering text but in addition there is a toolbar at the top of the editor. To create a new file you can use the “+” symbol in the Nextcloud file manager as usual.
However the real interesting aspect is the collaborative work: like in OnlyOffice and Collabora multiple people can work together on a file at the same time and see all changes by others “live”. You can also share Markdown files as a link and as in OnlyOffice and Collabore you can also allow others to edit a file this way. There is also the possibility to integrate a live chat or audio/video conference using the side bar.
A big advantage compared to a full blown office application: the editor does not require any additional service besides Nextcloud and will load much faster. If you just need shared text files especially for documentation and information exchange the new editor is good alternative. And last but not least you can read markdown as text everywhere.
