Enabling PIE/PIF test in CD-DVD Speed

:!: The following modifications were tested with version 4.0.6 and version 4.51.1 of CD-DVD Speed. Changes in the registry on one's own risk. I don't take any responsibility for damages, which may occur by changing the registry!*

CD-DVD Speed is a tool, which is offered with Nero Burning ROM and does a number of tests with CDs and DVDs (see also http://www.cdspeed2000.com). This includes speed of reading or the readability of media. With some drives, this tool also offers to determine the PIE/PIF values of recordable DVDs, which is a good clue, how good a DVD was recorded.

For drives, which do not officially support this feature, the appriopriate function is not available. But for certain models it can be very easily “unlocked” in the registry. The entry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Ahead\Nero Toolkit\CD Speed\CD Quality\Blocked

or as far as it exists, as well:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero Toolkit\CD Speed\CD Quality\Blocked
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Nero\Nero8\Nero Toolkit\DiscSpeed\CD Quality\Blocked
HKEY_USERS\username\Software\ahead\Nero Toolkit\CD Speed\CD Quality\Blocked

contains those drives, which are not allowed for PI/PO or PIE/PIF tests, e.g. PIONEER,SAMSUNG,TSST,HL-DT-ST,PLEXTOR. When you delete the text for the specific drive, corresponding the following list, you can execute the test without problems. “Deleting” means, that you remove the text and the comma – e.g. before PIONEER,SAMSUNG,TSST,HL-DT-ST,PLEXTOR and afterwards PIONEER,SAMSUNG,HL-DT-ST,PLEXTOR.

Probably you have to start CD-DVD Speed at least one time with the drive, so that the above-named entry exists.

Drive Text to delete
TSSTCorp SH-W162L (sold as “Samsung SH-W162L”) TSST
Samsung SH-S202N SAMSUNG

The stated drives are meant exactly – there is no guarantee, that other drives from the same manufacturer work too with the registry modifications.

Additions are welcome. Please write the exact drive name and the text, which had to be removed in the registry – thank you!

Sample scan with a Samsung SH-W162L

The following screenshot is CD-DVD Speed 4.0.6 – it was a test of a DVD+R 8x of Tevion, manufacturer “RITEK R03” ion a Samsung SH-W162L (in fact not really a “Samsung”, but it was sold under this label).

And here once again the same test with version 4.51.1 – the PIE values are not better, the tool just selected a different scale for the y axis, as the maximum PIE value was 55 instead of 49 (in both cases, the scale was set to “automatic”).
